Why buy Southern?

New England has a very rough climate.  Between the increasing issue of acid rain – and
snow – and the corrosive effects of salt on the roads, Northern cars rust and deteriorate
rapidly. 

Buying a Southern car allows you to get a good-quality, reasonably-priced used car with
its body still intact.

How is this different than buying online?

We offer the confidence of an experienced set of eyes, looking out for your interests. We
personally check out each vehicle, and give you detailed information about the features –
and faults.  If you have questions, we get them answered – all before you make a
commitment.

I don’t know much (or anything) about cars.  How do I know what to ask?

We can help. We pride ourselves on tailoring information to our customers. For folks that
are NOT “car people,” we offer simple explanations, in everyday language.

For example:

“This Subaru has a solid structure with minimal rust. It will need minor electrical work,
probably in the $200 - $300 range”

instead of

“The body is in good shape, with solid U joints and a good manifold. The wiring harness
in the back is somewhat corroded, so you’d probably want to replace it soon.”

How can I be sure that the car you find is what I’m looking for?

We will provide you with a detailed description, including close-up pictures, before
beginning any negotiations to buy it.  We will look the vehicle over and tell you about
any areas of concern that we find. You will have an opportunity to ask questions and get
answers before making your decision.

When do I pay?

You pay when we deliver the vehicle, after your test drive.

How much does the average car cost?

There is no one answer, due to the wide range of available vehicles. However, we sell
most vehicles at or below the Kelley Blue Book® value.

We also do not believe in “upselling.” If you give us a price range, we will search for
vehicles only within that range, and will find the best value we can.

Are there additional fees?

No. As long as you are present to take delivery at the arranged time, your quoted price, as
written on your agreement, is the total price including delivery. It does not include sales
tax, title, or registration.
The only additional charge you could incur from us is a
storage fee, if you are not present to accept delivery at the arranged time.

Where do you find the vehicles?

Some vehicles are private-sale, while others are sold at auctions.

I live in a really remote area.  Is delivery still available?

In almost every case, yes.  We require just enough space to turn our truck around. For
mud season deliveries, we do need to verify that your road is not posted!

I don’t know anything about cars.  How do I know I’m going to get a good car?

We can help with that!  We will go over the vehicle for you, and let you know if we find
any issues. If you are unsure about what you’re looking for, we can help you figure it out,
based on what’s important to you. In addition, prior to paying, you’ll have an opportunity
to test drive the vehicle. You can also have a mechanic of your own check it out at the
time of delivery.

Does the car come with a  warranty?

Some vehicles come with the balance of the manufacturer’s warranty.  Once the vehicle
has been paid for, all sales are final, so we recommend that you test drive the vehicle at
time of delivery.  We also encourage you to have a mechanic present at delivery to check
the car.

What types of vehicles can you find for me? 

Almost anything you’d like. Some brands and types of vehicles are easier to locate than
others (a reasonably-priced Ranger is easier to find than a mint-condition Nova), but we
will search for whatever you specify.

Can you find me a newer car?

Absolutely!  And newer cars often have the balance of the manufacturer’s warranty.

Can you find a 1973 lime-green Gremlin* for me?  ( *insert your favorite vehicle here)

Well … we can’t promise, but we can definitely search.  And you won’t ever find it if
you’re not looking! Give us a call, and let us start working for you!

Can I pick my vehicle up?  How much will it save me?

Yes. You can pick your vehicle up at our location, and save on transportation costs.
Since our delivery fee is based on our actual transportation costs, it varies, but on
average, you’d save about $300.

Do you have a car lot?

No. We buy specific cars for specific people, and keep them only until delivered.

Do you accept credit cards?

No.  By foregoing the credit card fees, we can pass the savings along to our customers.
You won’t be paying until we deliver, so we accept cash or cashier’s check at that time.

What if I don’t like the car?

We want you to be happy.  We provide as much information as possible prior to buying
the vehicle, so that you can make an informed decision. However, if the vehicle does not
meet your expectations for any reason, and it is not a special order vehicle, you can refuse
the vehicle and owe nothing. Please see our Policies page for more information.

What if I change my mind, or find another car?

Please let us know as soon as possible!  To avoid possibly incurring a fee, please make
sure to cancel prior to our purchasing the vehicle.

What is your cancellation policy?

Prior to our purchasing a vehicle for you, there is no fee. Please just let us know right
away, so we can stop searching. If we have already purchased the vehicle, there may be a
fee if we are unable to resell the car immediately. If we are already at the delivery site,
there may also be a delivery fee. Please see our Policies page for details.

What if I am not there to take delivery?

We do require that you be there to take delivery, sign a release, and give us your
payment.  We will schedule our delivery time at your convenience.  If you need to
reschedule, we request a minimum of 48 hours’ notice.  If you are not present at time of
delivery, and have not made alternate arrangements with us, we will, at our discretion,
find an alternate buyer for the vehicle or arrange storage for the vehicle.  All storage costs
incurred will be added to the price of the vehicle. There may also be a cancellation fee if
the vehicle is a special-order vehicle.

How long does it take?

It depends a lot on what you are looking for.  We may be able to find a good quality blue
Taurus within a week or two. That Gremlin we mentioned above will probably take a lot
longer!

How can you offer such good prices?

We keep our overhead low.  We don’t maintain a car lot – we look for specific cars, and
deliver them soon after purchase. We are based in West Virginia, so we can easily scout
for good values. The owner, though, is a Vermont native, and travels “home” frequently;
this, along with our relationship with other companies, allows us to keep our
transportation costs low.
